S.C. 9 travels 260 miles northwest from S.C. 65 (Ocean Boulevard) at Cherry Grove Beach to Spartanburg and the Tar Heel State as NC 9 to Boiling Springs. S.C. 9 stretches 42.01 miles across Horry County from the Atlantic Ocean along Long Bay to Nichols in adjacent Marion County. This includes an expressway bypass of Loris.

S.C. 9 overlaps with U.S. 76 west across the Lumber River into the town of Nichols. The two separate with U.S. 76 continuing west to Mullins and S.C. 9 turning north to Lake View in Dillon County. S.C. 9 runs along Bear Swamp northwest from S.C. 41 toward Dillon, where it combines with U.S. 301 and S.C. 57 on Second Avenue.

Branching northwest from U.S. 301, S.C. 9/57 meet Interstate 95 at Exit 193 and part ways in the unincorporated community of Little Rock. S.C. 9 advances to Clio and Bennettsville in Marlboro County. The state highway combines with U.S. 1 west from Wallace into the Chesterfield County town of Cheraw.

Within Cheraw, U.S. 1/S.C. 9 navigate along Powe Street to 2nd Street, where U.S. 52 joins the two south to Market Street in Downtown. S.C. 9 follows Chesterfield Highway west along a commercial strip out of Cheraw en route to the county seat of Chesterfield.

Staying close to the North Carolina border, S.C. 9 runs west to Ruby, Mt. Croghan and Pageland. U.S. 601/S.C. 9 overlap 3.49 miles west from McGregor Street in Downtown Pageland. Beyond U.S. 601, S.C. 9 spans the Lynches River into Lancaster County en route to Lancaster.

S.C. 9 joins U.S. 521 along an arterial bypass of Lancaster while S.C. 9 Business stays to the south along a 5.34 mile long course across the city. Maintaining four lanes, S.C. 9 advances west over the Catawba River into Chester County ahead of Fort Lawn. The state highway crosses I-77 north of Richburg en route to Chester.

S.C. 9 bypasses Chester to the south alongside S.C. 72 and U.S. 321 while a 2.85 mile long business route leads west into the city center. S.C. 9 runs across Union County from the town of Lockhart to Jonesville and the Spartanburg County ahead of Pacolet.

Combining with U.S. 176 (S Pine Street), S.C. 9 proceeds northwest into the city of Spartanburg. U.S. 176/S.C. 9 become a part of Interstate 585 from the exchange with U.S. 221 (Whitney Road) to their separation at Boiling Springs Road. S.C. 9 continues north to Boiling Springs and Green River, North Carolina. The multi state route extends 46.49 miles north to Lake Lure, Bat Cave and Black Mountain.
