Broward County was not always its own county. It was formed in 1915 from the southern portion of Palm Beach County and the northern portion of Dade County. Prior to the creation of Broward County, the dividing line between Palm Beach and Dade Counties was located between Commercial Boulevard and Oakland Park Boulevard (Floranada Road in Fort Lauderdale).4

Interstate 95 North
A wayfinding sign advises motorists destined for Fort Lauderdale in Broward County and distant Orlando to continue north on Interstate 95. 04/01/14
Crossing Little River Canal, Interstate 95 approaches the diamond interchange (Exit 8 A) with NW 95th Street in one quarter mile. Exit 8 B follows with SR 923 (NW 103rd Street), as both exits serve Miami Shores to the east. 01/23/16
Interstate 95 passes just west of the village of El Portal by this shield assembly. 04/01/14
NW 95th Street is also known as the Rev. Dr. A. Jackson, Jr. Boulevard. The street heads east to Miami Shores, where it connects with NE 2nd Avenue in the city business district, and west to West Little River. 01/23/16
A diamond interchange joins I-95 with SR 932 (NW 103rd Avenue) west of Miami Shores and east of Pinewood Park next. Signed state roads become more prevalent on local streets as Interstate 95 passes through the unincorporated, yet well-developed areas of Miami-Dade County. 01/23/16
Exit 8 B leaves Interstate 95 north for SR 932 (NE 103rd Avenue). The state road runs 9.70 miles between U.S. 27 (Okeechobee Road) in Hialeah Gardens and SR 915 (NE 6th Avenue) in Miami Shores. 01/23/16

One quarter mile out from the half diamond interchange (Exit 11) with NW 151st Street on I-95 north. NW 151st Street connects the freeway with adjacent U.S. 441 (NW 7th Avenue), which in turns crosses Biscayne Canal north to the Golden Glades Park & Ride Lot and Golden Glades Station on Tri-Rail. 01/23/16
Interstate 95 crosses back into unincorporated Miami-Dade County north of the NW 143rd Street underpass. 01/23/16

SR 858 (Hallandale Beach Boulevard) meets I-95 in a half mile at Exit 18. The drawbridge that carries Hallandale Beach Boulevard over the Intracoastal Waterway to SR A1A (Ocean Boulevard) made the news on January 29, 2005, when cameras captured the image of an elderly woman, Helen Koton, hanging onto the bridge while it raised to its vertical position. She was able to survive with a few bumps and bruises. These cameras were installed due to the presence of two "blindspots" that cannot be seen from the bridge tender control tower.6 Cameras were considered for some of the other 13 drawbridges in Broward County, especially as a result of another drawbridge accident on SR 838 (Sunrise Boulevard) in Fort Lauderdale. In that accident, 82 year old Savitiri Motwane was killed October 2, 2003, as she was unable to hang on to the bridge as it raised to allow clearance for two boats to pass under the Sunrise Boulevard bridge.7 01/23/16
