SR 540, the Fall Line Freeway, was established by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in 2018.2 A multi lane and mostly at-grade route, SR 540 generally overlays preexisting routes along a 215 mile long corridor between Columbus and Augusta. 07/26/22
Although this distance sign references Newnan at 74 miles away, the city is 65 miles north via I-185, I-85 and U.S. 27 ALT. LaGrange is 40 miles away instead of 42 and Downtown Atlanta is 100 miles instead of 97. 07/26/22
GDOT began signing SR 540 along the Fall Line Freeway on September 24, 2018.2 The state route extends west along U.S. 80 to the Alabama state line. 07/26/22
Collector distributor roadways line both sides of I-185 through the cloverleaf interchange (Exit 10) with U.S. 80/SR 22-540 (J.R. Allen parkway). J.R. Allen Parkway stretches 12.3 miles across north Columbus as a freeway between U.S. 280 in Phenix City, Alabama and U.S. 27 ALT/SR 85 (Manchester Expressway). 07/25/22
Joining Columbus with Macon, SR 540 (Fall Line Freeway) accompanies U.S. 80 east to Geneva, and SR 96 from there to Butler and SR 49 around Fort Valley. 07/25/22
The exit for U.S. 80/SR 22 east joins a c/d roadway to interchanges with U.S. 27 and Moon Road. U.S. 80 separates from SR 540 (Fall Line Freeway) north to Talbotton and continues east to Roberta and Macon. 07/25/22

Smith Road winds west from the diamond interchange (Exit 14) with I-185 to Whitesville Road by Pine Knoll Lake and east to Fortson and Woodbridge Roads, south of Fortson. 07/26/22
