New sign gantries for I-384

I-384 westbound Exit 2 This is a new sign gantry for eastbound I-384 exit 2. I'm not quite sure why Conn DOT elected to replace the old one seeing as it was not damaged and completely functional. The other part about this seemingly preemptive replacement is that there are other signs throughout the state that could be updated first. Here's what the old one looked like: [...]

Two years more in the making, Interstate 485 grows again

Barricades were removed on the latest stretch of Interstate 485 to open for motorists in the northern Charlotte area yesterday. What was expected to be completed in March 2007 opened without any fanfare by midday between North Carolina 16 (Brookshire Boulevard) and Interstate 77 / North Carolina 115 (Old Statesville Road). The 5.5 mile stretch completes the northwest quadrant of the Charlotte beltway, leaving the unconstructed northeast quadrant as the [...]

Expanding and Extending Interstate 15’s Managed Lanes

Expansion along Interstate 15 within San Diego County continues in the form of widened Managed or HOT Lanes both in capacity and in length. The freeway project entails the freeway from the merge with California 163 (Cabrillo Freeway) northward to junction California 78. Upon completion, Interstate 15 will vary between 12 and 14 overall lanes. Looking northward at the Poway Road off-ramp, the current one-way two-lane Managed Lanes [...]

Mr. Mayor…Tear down this freeway

That is the cry of the Onondaga Citizens League about Interstate 81 in downtown Syracuse. Built in the 1960s, the aging viaduct is nearing the end of its lifespan, begging the question, do we repair it for $100 million or tear it down and build something else? Supporters of the demolition plan cite Milwaukee's 2002 removal of the Park Freeway spur leading east from Interstate 43. That freeway, constructed in [...]

Interstate 485 Growing Pains

Its I-40 … its not I-40 … this just in, its I-40 again

Construction of the new Greensboro bypass, otherwise known as Painter Boulevard, resulted in the relocation of Interstate 85 from the city onto the southeastern section of the new road in 2004 and then Interstate 40 on both the sections of the new bypass in February 2008. The new bypass was constructed in an effort to alleviate the through-city route of Interstates 40 and 85 and their "Death Valley" interchange south [...]

The Mystery of Georgia’s Business Loops

Georgia was the one of a few southeastern states to openly embrace the concept of using Interstate Business Loops in the early days. North Carolina had its loops through Lexington, Fayetteville, and Rocky Mount, before the urban freeway loops of Winston-Salem and Greensboro (of which Business Loop I-40 was recently decommissioned) joined the list. Those routes represented temporary Interstate alignments or former Interstate alignments. South Carolina contributed with its Business [...]

Three Texas Road news items

My home state has had a busy year with opening new stretches of major roadway. A large section of the new tolled SH 121 freeway north of Dallas opened in August. The new 16-mile stretch from Frisco to the southwest forms a partial loop of northern Dallas. San Antonio's newest behemoth opened in August as well, at the junction of the US 281 freeway and Interstate 410. The two busiest [...]

Bluegrass, Mint Juleps, and Hal “I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that” Rogers Parkway

Speaking of places that aaroads does not cover in too much detail, we'd like to introduce a new Kentucky page. So far, only I-64 and Lexington's New Circle Road are posted but all Louisville area freeways, and a few other roadways in the "Golden Triangle" area of the state are coming soon. Edit: They're all up now! I'd like to especially thank the Louisville Courier-Journal for the use of their [...]

Jacksonville Area Road Notes

Florida 23 north at the future First Coast Expressway Update on the Branan Field-Chaffee Expressway, well not much has changed, construction has progressed a little on the future freeway connector and interchange between Florida 23 and Interstate 10. This scene however, looks identical to December 2007. Touted as Segment 2 of the overall project, work began January 16, 2007 and is expected to be completed by next [...]
