Interstate 76 / 295 / NJ 42 Direct Connection

Another major project underway in the Philadelphia is area is the $900 million upgrade of the junction where Interstate 295 ties into I-76 and NJ 42 (North South Freeway) at Bellmawr. Studies outlined deficiencies with the interchange, including geometric conditions and the lack of a direct connection for I-295 through movements, in addition to the need to improve traffic safety. Eleven improvement alternatives were evaluated, with four selected for further [...]

University Parkway at I-75 DDI Progress – Sarasota, Florida

Construction continues on the $74.5 million project to convert the busy diamond interchange linking Interstate 75 with University Parkway in Sarasota, Florida to a large diverging diamond (DDI). Work runs through fall 2017 on what is touted as the state's first DDI. In addition to building new overpasses for Interstate 75 above University Parkway, the extended ramps to the east-west arterial, and the ten-lane wide DDI, construction also adds auxiliary [...]

Interstate Completion Watchlist

The often delayed interchange between Interstate 65 and the new Interstate 22 in north Birmingham is finally nearing completion. Although now 18 months behind schedule from the October 2014 target date, final paving along the two mile stretch between Coalburg Road and I-65 should be finished by June. Observations from the Road: Southeast Iowa

Enjoyed a break in the cloudy weather on our resent visit to Iowa to tag along with Bill and his son Joey on 300 mile day trip exploring various U.S., state and county routes across southeastern Iowa. Here are a few noteworthy things and photos from the drive on March 25. Six years after the realignment of U.S. 61 to bypass Davenport, signs along U.S. 6 still reflect the [...]

Map Finds from February 15th

Occasionally we make trips out to area flea markets, swap meets and antique stores in the search for more maps to add to our growing collection. The majority of these are open on weekends, with others, like New Castle Farmers Market's outdoor flea market in Delaware (a long time favorite of mine), open on Friday as well. Some of the largest flea markets in the county operate on weekdays and [...]

Updates and Road News for the week of February 1

This week we finished adding photos taken last month in Upstate South Carolina and moved on from there to additional material sent in from Peter in the Green Bay area. Carter shot some of U.S. 123 between Easley and Greenville, so we coupled those photos with previous photos he took in April 2014 and from a drive Brent and I did back in December 2008 to three new pages. U.S. [...]

Updates and Road News for the week of January 25

Well no big snowstorm this week, at least for the east coast. The western U.S. however is receiving a large storm system, with heavy rains and mountain snows. Rainy now across #SierraNevada passes but that'll change this evening as snow levels drop. Plan ahead! #cawx pic.twitter.com/x3omK3JV2t — NWS Sacramento (@NWSSacramento) January 29, 2016 Now on to the road news and updates for this week at AARoads. Today we completed adding [...]

1946 Baltimore and 1956 Hawaii Maps

In addition to the recent 1942 Washington, D.C. map we acquired, we got our hands on some other goodies, including a city map of Baltimore, Maryland and a map of the Hawaiian Islands including a Honolulu street map. We'll touch on some of the highlights for the Baltimore map before moving onward to the Aloha state. The Baltimore city map is a Rand McNally base with a date code of [...]

South Florida Road Updates – January 23

Spent a few hours driving around South Florida, revisiting a few areas previously covered to see construction progress on a number of projects. The main changes throughout Broward and the Miami area involve adding high occupancy toll (HO/T) lanes and the conversion of toll roads to All Electronic Tolling (AET). Coinciding with the toll projects are additions of flyovers at some exits and a complete overhaul at others. [...]

Updates and Road News for the week of January 18

While a blizzard dumps one to two feet snow on the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, here's a look at some of the updates at AARoads this week. Contributor Peter Johnson sent in some photos he took this week of Wisconsin 172, which we combined with some photos we took of the state trunk highway back in 2011 for a new guide. The short east-west route forms a freeway between I-41 and [...]
