Fairmount Park was originally within the property of American patriot Robert Morris in 1770. The land was first used for farming and gardens. It remained undeveloped and unspoiled by the industrial landscape south of there until 1851, when the city acquired most of it. Fairmount Park was dedicated by Philadelphia City Council for use as public parkland on September 28, 1855.
