Finishing up with updates from our recent roadtrip to the Midwest/Great Plains. The morning of October 7, 2021, we did a loop around Kansas City covering a few things that have changed since the last photos shot for the site back in 2016. Also caught a story on the local news that morning regarding the replacement of the John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge taking U.S. 169 across the Missouri River north of Downtown Kansas City. The three arch span is at the end of its lifespan and a $220 million project got underway in July 2021 to replace it with a plate girder bridge. Construction on the new crossing is anticipated for completion in December 2024.

US 169 Buck O'Neil Bridge - Central Alternative

The Central Alternative was selected as the Preferred Alternative. It includes new flyover ramps directly linking I-35 north with U.S. 169 north and U.S. 169 south with I-35 south. Flyovers will also be built between the new span and Broadway over 3rd Street. A multi use path is incorporated into the design of the northbound span.
